In The Corner And On The Ropes With Daniel Ponce de Leon (2013.10.28)

In the corner and on the ropes. I was standing just outside the neutral corner when I shot these photos. Here are some images from yesterdays (2013.10.28) Super Bantamweight Champ Daniel Ponce de Leon's sparing session at his boxing gym in Montebello CA.  Eight rounds with two different partners, 4 rounds each. With a record of  44-5, you can easily see why 35 of those victories came by way of knock outs.
I may not get to shoot as many events as I like, but I do manage to gain access to a good number of fighters as they are training and in many cases get to know them personally. I didn't have time to stay for the rest of that session, but next time - on the pads and bags.

Special thanks to Daniel Ponce de Leon

Alejandro Luna vs Daniel Attah; 2013.10.19 Pico Rivera - Gary Shaw Productions

The Main event was a matchup of lightweights featuring local favorite Alejandro Luna against Nigerian Daniel Attah. Luna's power proved too much for Attah, who spent most of the fight against the ropes. Attah retired after the 7th round dropping his record to 28-16-1, 11 KOs, while Luna unbeaten record improved to 16-0, 12 KOs.

Here are some of the images of that bout. Due to the low light levels these images were shot with an ISO of 20,000, hence the graininess!

Many thanks to Gary Shaw Productions and Mario Serrano.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr / Brian Vera ; 2013.09.28

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr's highly anticipated return to the rink was a controversial one at that. Not only did he have trouble making weight (not making, and having to fight at a heavier weight class), but his seemingly safe opponent was everything but safe. Brian Vera fought an aggressive fight, had Chavez baking up for most of it and appeared to have won the fight. Chavez Jr to his credit did score some power punches which stunned Vera, and in the end was awarded the victory by way of a unanimous decision. Here are my images from that fight. All images were shot with Canon 1Dx and 600mm lens (Canon 300mm 2.8 w/ 2x extender).
