On Jan. 22, 2012 The L.A. Matodars played host to the (previously) undefeated Milano Thunder. By the insertion of 'previously' you can guess the outcome, The Matadors won 4-1. Eating Japanese - Yakitori Koshiji

A recurring theme of mine is of course food, after all man cannot live on words & concepts alone. One of my favorite cuisine is Japanese. I am always looking for a new good Yakitori, Sushi or Ramen Restaurant. Recently I had Yakitori at Koshiji. Koshiji has 2 locations, one in Little Tokyo and the other in Torrance. I had eaten at the Little Tokyo location before so I thought I would try the Torrance one this time.
Here are some images that I took while I was there. These images are not really of the food, more or less of the vibe. All images were shot with a Panasonic GX-1 w/ 20mm f/1.7 lens.

Surfing at Breakwall Redondo Beach - 2012.01.06

Today was 'Big (Wave) Friday', for some unknown reason it has always happened on a Wednesday, but this year it's a 'Big Friday'. I had shot at the Manhattan Beach Pier earlier in the day, but at lunch I had heard it was really big at Breakwall. I had been wanting to shoot this surfing spot on a big day, so today was my opportunity.
Afternoon shots on the West Coast are always problematic, the sun is low in the sky and the surfers and the waves are backlit. To complicate matters even more there was a great deal of spray in the air, reducing visibility and focus even more.
These are todays shots.

Seems every December lately, I am house bound for one reason or another. Last year I not only had a knee injury but it also rained for 2 weeks straight. At that time I discovered the Hipstamatic App for the iPhone. I used it to shoot an extensive series of images documenting where and how I live. In addition to my regular photography I have shot over 4K Hipstamatic images in the past year.
So, this year I found myself in a similar situation, so again I decided to document my house (mostly in color this time).

Shaping with Mike Geib; Custom Made Surfboards

One of the best kept secrets in Southbay surfing, is shaper Mike Geib. Mike shaped his first board when he was 18 and some 10,000+ plus boards later, he is still going strong. Now on more or less part time basis. Once the shaper for Dewey Weber, he now shapes for Tyler Surfboards. Although primarily shaping long boards for Tyler, Mike does shape all sizes on a commission basis.

I took the liberty of dropping in on Mike as he was shaping a "double step" long board for Tyler.

It usually take 3 - 4 hours to shape a board, then needs to be painted and glassed. Mike doesn't glass his own boards, he says it would be a disaster.

The shaping room in itself is unremarkable and austere. Fluorescent tubes hung in such a fashion as to illuminate just the board and accent the shape of the rails. Small and cramped, just enough space to move around the foam blank being carved.

It is always good to put a face, and a wet suit on the subject. Here is Mike waxing his one of his personal favorite boards. Mike usually surfs in Manhattan Beach, south side of the pier.

He calls it 'the pilgrim', makes me think of John Wayne.

Charles Bukowski - In Search of Henry Chinaski

Charles Bukowski died on March 9, 1994, but his alter-ego Henry Chinaski lives on in his literature. Although, in 1986 Time called him a “laureate of American lowlife”, Bukowski never won the Pulitzer Prize nor was he a Nobel Laureate. He did write about his home city of Los Angeles almost exclusively.

In the ever changing landscape of Los Angeles, some of Bukowski’s/Chinaski’s haunts still survive, and some have disappeared (victims of gentrification, urban redevelopment, or just plain neglect). Los Angeles itself is a much different place , the Hollywood dives are now trendy hangouts. Downtown LA, the manufacturing area in particular is being re-developed into residential lofts, and even Skid Row is getting a gradual facelift!

In 1952, Bukowski started working for the US Post Office, first as a carrier, then as a clerk and sorter. He worked at the Terminal annex Post Office, until 1970, when he resigned to pursue a full time writing career.

Much of Bukowski’s earlier works were written when he lived on De Longpre Avenue, East Hollywood. An interesting street not only filled with other Courtyard Apartments, but also Ukrainian Catholic Church.

These Courtyard Apartments across the street have been featured in several Hollywood Films.

Although Bukowski did spend a lot of time in bars, he apparently did a great deal of his drinking at home. His favorite liquor store, not far from his home, was Pink Elephant Liquors, on N. Western.

Musso & Franks was one of his favorite Hollywood hangouts, the Original Spanish Kitchen and Norm’s were also frequented by Hank.

All that remains of The Original Spanish Kitchen is the sign, now considered a landmark.

Both Henry and hank liked the ponies, and santa Anita figured in strongly.

Bukowski liked to spend time at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, he was also known to take his girlfriends there.

He may have frequented many bars, but here are a few of note.

The Frolic Room has now become a hip and trendy hangout in Hollywood.

There are others in Hollywood, that claim he frequented there, but let us move downtown. The area that is known as Skid Row, which at times can still be dicey but has seen an amazing transformation.

5th and Main can still look rough. Here we can find the Rosslyn Hotel.

But, just one block away, Located in thew King Edward Hotel is the King Eddy Salon. Not much has changed here except perhaps the addition of the flat screen tv’s.

Sadly Craby Joes closed its doors 5 years ago. You can still see the outline of the old sign on the remaining store front. Dr Lee, looks over the intersection (labelled Bukowski Square by Larry Harnisch) with an approving smile.

In addition to the bars, he also frequented the following downtown.

The Grand Central Market,

Cole's French Dip,

And, The Clifton Cafeteria.

All in all, downtown Los Angeles has changed significantly since Bukowski wrote about it, The alleys are no longer filled with garbage.

Yes there are still some SRO’s.

While other old Hotels have re-invented themselves as trendy hotels on Skid Row.

Union Stage has seen an resurgence!

The Royal Palms where he also lived for a while is now a Half-way House. Sort of ironic don’t you think.

Even McArthur Park has been given a new lease on life.

But when you contrast what has been there with what is replacing it. With the new skyline towering over the old, we certainly don’t want to lose anymore!

Finally. Bukowski’s final years were spent living in San Pedro (but that is another project). He is buried not far from there at Green Hill Memorial Park.

Notes: I have been working on this project for over 2 years. I originally developed the idea 5 years ago when I was working on a project that required a lot of filming in the Downtown area. In earnest started researching about 2 years ago and finishing it as I write these notes (going out this morning to grab a few more shots). The images have been shot with a variety of cameras. Leica M8, Canon 5D mkII, Canon 1DmkIII, iP4, with Leica, Zeiss and Canon lenses. The images here are only a small selection of what I have shot. The Downtown Los Angeles area is visually rich and full of history.

A truly beautiful day, warm sun, mild winds and some good sized waves. Back on the East Coast this would have been labeled as one of the 10 best days of the year. Not to rub it in, but here on the West Coast this is more routine and we kind of take it for granted.

Sun was out and the surf was good. Building actually, should be even better tomorrow. The crew that I shot today was, Natalie, Mike Geib (more on Mike in a subsequent post), Robert, Chris, Jim plus a 2 I don't know by name.

WTC - Twin Towers

April 1978, finally decided to shoot the Twin Towers. The rest of the Center had not been built yet, and it was a bit of a no man's land at the time. My interests usually took me to the 40's-70's on the West Side. At the time I was concentrating on what was old and disappearing in NYC (especially the waterfront), not with what was new. So it was a rarity that I found myself this far south in Manhattan. I always thought I would go back downtown and shoot more images, but I never did get around to it again.
Every year, since 2001, late August I promise myself to go into my archives for these images. This year on the 10 anniversary of the destruction of the Towers, I decided to do just that. Here are some of the raw scans (chromes) from that shoot.

Rodeo Drive and Sunset Blvd: A Study in Contrast

Scouting for our various locations will always take me to a variety of areas. The other day it was Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills and Sunset Blvd in Hollywood. A stark contrast, in style and content!

Well this street corner could be anywhere.

And, then to Sunset. Different offerings, emblems and clientele.

Both uniquely different, but an integral part of the LA scene.

Takoyaki

Tako is Japanese for octopus, and takoyaki are grilled octopus balls. A popular street food which originated in Osaka where Tomekichi Endo is credited with their invention. The dumplings, cooked in a special takoyaki pan, are made of batter filled with octopus, tempura scraps, pickled ginger and green onion. Once cooked the balls are topped with takoyaki sauce, mayonnaise, and dried bonito shavings. There are other variations of toppings including soy sauce, sesame and vinegar sauce or dashi.

Takoyaki has a very strong smokey flavor and is definitely an acquired taste. Here are some iP4 images I shot of the cooking process.

After cooking the balls are transferred to a tray.

Which are then packaged in boxes and the toppings applied.

Boxes are sealed.

And you have a meal ready to go. Eat on the run or take home.

Hakata Ramen - Shin Sen Gumi

Driving down Redondo Beach Boulevard in Gardena, CA, well before you can read the name of the restaurant, you can read what it serves. Shin Sen Gumi, located in a non descript strip mall, specializes in Hakata ramen.

Hakata ramen is considered one of the three top ramen styles in Japan. It is named after the place of its origin, Hakata a city located north west of Kyushu. The main characteristic of Hakata ramen is a white soup, made primarily from pork bones (Tonkotsu) which are cooked for a long time over extremely high heat. This method of cooking releases the bone marrow and gives the soup the thick richness.

CRASH landed in Los Angeles

Being a transplant from the East Coast, when it comes to Graffitti two names come to mind. CRASH and DAZE. Yes there is Futura, Fab 5 Freddie and Lee Quinones and quite a number of others, but for some reason CRASH and DAZE stuck. Although Haring and Basquiat are often mentioned in the same breath, content and approach are significantly different. CRASH has not only made the transition from Street Art to Gallery Art, but he has also painted guitars for Eric Clapton and more recently designed a line of luggage for TUMI.
According to John (CRASH) Matos, in 30 years of exhibitions, his work has only made three appearance here in Los Angeles. Well I would say that Los Angeles has been really dis-advantaged. Well Angelenos, here is your chance. You can not only see some of CRASH's older work at MoCA 'Art in The Streets'(until August 8), but you can see some of his recent work in the current exhibition "Blurring The Lines" at the Corey Helford Gallery in Culver CIty (until May 18).

Blurring the Lines The Current exhibit at The Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City showcases new works by the graffiti artists Crash, Freedom and Risk. Curated by Roger Gastman , co-curator of MoCA's 'Art in the Streets', "is a dynamic intersection of legendary East and West coast writers, where the lines that divide urban art and the new contemporary fine art world converge."

Art in The Streets at MoCA

The amazing thing about MoCA's current exhibition at The Geffen Contemporary, is the enthusiasm and energy you feel in the Museum. You get a hint of this approaching the Geffen from 1st Street when you are struck by this colorful 3 story mural on the side of the building. You start to feel the buzz as you walk past the painted Metro Bus and the long line waiting to get in. Once in the door, it is total excitement, you are in a different world. The museum becomes the environment, art hanging on the walls, art painted on the walls, skateboarding ramps, painted cars, and theme park like installations serving as a backdrop to help re-inforce the message. The message that this art "emerged from American housing projects, subway yards, and bleak suburban parking lots during the 1970's".
It started as simple tagging, I remember seeing the tags on the 'A Line' in NYC (one that always comes to mind "Cha Cha 161"), and progressed to amazing murals covering entire subway cars and multiple cars. Standing on a subway platform in the morning, many of us couldn't wait to see the nights work of the graffiti artists, and we were never disappointed. They became household names (at least in NYC) especially after New York Magazine did a cover story on several.

Malibu Castle Park, Redondo Beach

Although Malibu Castle Park, miniature golf park & arcade, has been closed for over 10 years it is still listed by Golf Link and Yelp as an active business. What gives with that? Passing by last night I was reminded that it was still there. So I stopped by this morning and took the following shots.
The castle is gone, but the 4+ story windmill still stands. The site has been trashed, and tagging and street art cover the walls. The area is heavily overgrown and resembles ruins in the Yucatan more than an abandoned-mini theme park.

The only other structure remaining, an adobe belfry.

Someone has even pitched a tent in the center (note the blue tent), and is living in his own private resort.

Something can be said for the quality of the putting green carpets - they still hold up!

At least the local street artists make good use of the abandoned buildings.

King Harbor 2011.04.11

Here are some images I shot yesterday at King Harbor. Late afternoon, pelicans on the break wall, harbor seals lazing on the docks, and a gull or two.

It's late in the day and the harbor seals start to gather on this floating dock.

Not very clean conditions at all today, combo swell that seemed to fight itself. A few big sets did roll in however. Here are 2 sequences, one of Natalie and one of Chris.

This sequence of Chris was shot w/ Canon 1D mkIII and Canon 300mm f/2.8 lens w/1.4 adapter.

As you can see from the sequences, the left were better today.

Mike B at the MB Pier

Finally timed it perfectly, or was it a mere coincidence. Seems that every time I get to the pier to shoot, Mike B had just left, or else, I was there in the morning and he wasn't coming until the afternoon. Well today it finally worked out. Surf started out small and slow. Thought I would try it any ways, it was such a great day. Didn't look real promising. Then I had noticed Mike B had paddled out. He tore it up, and then a couple of larger sets rolled it. Fortunately or unfortunately I had only one card w/ me. So I only got a couple hundred shots off. Here are some of them.

Life Support Japan

Life Support Japan is an effort by photographers and galleries around the world to raise money to support those affected by the earthquake and tsunamis that struck Japan on March 11th, 2011. Money raised from these joint efforts will be donated to Direct Relief International (www.directrelief.org) and Habitat for Humanity Japan (www.habitatjp.org).

Currently there are two efforts that I am involved in:

1. Wall Space Gallery in Santa Barbara, CA and Seattle, WA is handling the online auction at www.wall-spacegallery.com (http://wall-spacegallery.com/displayShow.php?showID=124). This address will change because participation far exceeded the original anticipated response. Each photographer commits to contributing an special edition of 10 of an image. These will be sold for $50 each.

This is my contribution, it is not listed yet but should be in a few days.

Photographers have donated pieces from their bodies of work for the silent auction. The auction will take place from 11am-5pm and winners will be announced at 6pm on March 19th. Bids will be taken at the gallery and also by absentee bidding. I will post more information when it is available.

Mercedes Benz E350: As Seen Through The Lens of Hipstamatic

So there I was sitting in a parking lot, waiting while Eve runs a few quick errands. With little else to do, and since I cannot bear idle time, I decide to shoot a few images of my car. Shot with an iP4and the Hipstamatic app.
Hope you not getting bored with the Hipstamatic, I'm not and there are plenty of images to follow.

Arthroscopic Knee Surgery: by way of Hipstamatic

I had arthroscopic knee surgery on Thursday for a torn meniscus. I thought I would document this procedure as far as I could with my iP4 using my Hipstamatic app. Yes I still shoot with my Leica M8 and Canon 5DmkII, but I'm enamored by this app. It makes quite ordinary and pedestrian shots look like works or art. Now I'm not making a judgemental call on my photography, I'm merely stating how wonderful this app is.
The day started early with a ride up PCH, through El Segundo.

Under the LAX runways.

Finally turning into the Howard Hughes Center in Westchester.

Looking up at the clinic building, surgery is on the third floor.

Up the elevator.

Not much for patients or their companions to in the waiting room except check Facebook.

Fill out the paperwork.

And, sit.

Lookout the window,

And sit some more.

Well, I wanted to shoot in the O.R. but it turns out I was fast asleep before ever seeing what it looked like. They could have performed the procedure in the parking structure and it would have made no difference to me.

They sent me home with a bunch of narcotics.

And, these two holes in my knee.

Looking Up -LA & Hollywood

Sitting in a scouting van for 10 hours can be a harrowing if not boring experience. Even armed with a camera there is little to do, unless you want to shoot blurry images of passengers in cars. But then it started to get dark and we were cruising the streets of LA and Hollywood. Ah thank goodness for stop lights. For a fleeting moment there is a photo-op, with a choice between my Leica and my iP4, I opted for my iP4. After all with Hipstamatic the post processing is part of the picture taking process.
Here are some of the images I took as it got progressively darker, and virtually no battery life left.

Musso & Frank Grill, 6667 Hollywood Blvd., is Hollywoods oldest eatery. First opened its doors in 1919, and in its heyday was frequented by Hollywoods Elite.

I'm finding it difficult to write lengthy post while I am as busy as I have been lately. So instead I will post a photo, or multiple photos of the day. At least until a time when I can organize my thoughts around longer posts.
All Images are shot with the iPhone4 and the Hipstamatic iphone app. Apple had declared the Hipstamatic the iPhone app of 2010. I think we can go further, I would venture to call it the photo app of the year. It has put an element creativity into digital photography that has been missing.

Hipstamatic

Hipstamatic is a great photo app for the iphone that renders an analog effect to the digital images. There is the initial app and plenty of add ons, these put the mystery back into photography. The framing is not precise and output is not very controllable, if at all. But the end result is always a pleasant surprise. It is like shooting with a Lomo but with instant results. I've just started playing around with it in the last few days. here are some of my results.

The above images were all taken w/ the John S lens & Ina's 69 film setting. Below are 2 images taken with the same lens and Salvador Dream Canvas Film setting. In addition I have posted 3 images with with Blackeys B&W film setting. Various other film setting are available, all very very inexpensive.

A short portion of yesterday morning's drive to work was through an eerie fog, the neighborhood streets take on a totally different dimension. Although shot in color I converted the images to black & white using NIK Silver Efex Pro.

LACMA - Fashioning Fashion

Fashioning Fashion: European Dress in Detail, 1700-1915, currently on view in the Resnick Pavilion at LACMA. Past experiences with this type of historical exhibit had left me cold. Usually a regimented and dry. This exhibit has a different tone, set in a monochromatic environment consisting of a serpentine arrangement of what appear to be shipping crates. The crates create not just a neutral backdrop for the costumes but also act as a frame around them. Giving each costume its own space while not interrupting the flow. The mannequins themselves have a porcelain white appearance, conveying a uniformity if not a fragility. In contrast running along the walls of the gallery space in bold red letters is the name of the exhibit.
The combination of all of these elements made for an interesting photographic experience. Several mirrors were incorporated into the environment which made it even more interesting for me.

The exhibit runs through March 6, 2011.

Resnick Pavilion - Eye for the Sensual

Eye for the Sensual: Selections from the Resnick Collection, is one of three exhibits currently on view in the Resnick Pavilion at LACMA. Sensual it is: The gallery rooms are not painted white, rather they are decorated. Decorated with dark paint or wallpaper with contrasting moulding. Mirrors are artfully used to allow the viewer to see all sides or sculptures resulting an illusion of even bigger spaces. The art blends into the environment rather jumping off the walls. The entire experience not just the art is 'sensual'.
Mirrors of course adding another dimension for myself. If you are a follower of my blog you are certainly aware of my penchant for self portraits.

LACMA - Resnick Pavilion

Several weeks ago LACMA complete Phase II of its transformation when The Resnick Pavilion opened to the public on October 2. This marks an addition of 45,000 square feet of gallery space.
The single story structure is the "largest purpose-built, naturally lit, open-plan museum space in the world". The Resnick Pavilion opened with 3 exhibits(to be discussed in subsequent postings). Eye for the Sensual:Selections from the Resnick Collection; Olmec: Colossal Masterworks of Ancient Mexico; and Fashioning Fashion: European Dress in Detail, 1700-1915.

The opening of this gallery space comes just two years after the completion of Phase I of the LACMA transformation. Phase I included the opening of the 60,000 square foot BCAM gallery space. With the inclusion of Chris Burden's Urban Light.

The addition of these two gallery spaces coupled with some very intelligent choices, LACMA has transformed itself into a World Class Museum. A museum with viewing galleries of a good proportion, to accommodate larger works of art, and allowing the viewer to step back and enjoy the experience.

Topanga Ranch Motel

Topanga Ranch Motel

18711 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu

Built in the early 20’s, to house the workers who built US 1 (Pacific Coast Highway), these 30 red & white bungalows still stand. This site received Historical status some time ago and since 2001 is a part of the Topanga State Park, with a supposed $2 million set aside recently for restoration.

The only inhabitant these days is the Park Ranger. You will not be able to stay there anytime soon. One can stop however and have a look, and while you are there enjoy a meal or a drink at the Reel Inn a very casual seafood restaurant that shares the same parking lot.

Excess and Over-indulgence

About 10 days ago I posted about Abstinence and Austerity, today I will take it to other extreme, Excess and Overindulgence.
This is a currently unoccupied (for sale) residence, with a great deal of the original furnishing included in the sales price. The owner after remodeling the interior, of a house with an rather nondescript exterior, then proceeded to spend in excess of $1 million on furnishings. Gold leafed furniture and some questionable art.
Not your typical family home!
Wonder what kind of parties were thrown here?

Lets start with the foyer:

Here's a shot of part of the Living room, I think a couple of throw pillows and a few plants could warm things up quite a bit.

The dining room, lacks sparkle don't you think.

The office/study, certainly a room for deep thought.

Hallway outside the Master Suite. Remember I mentioned questionable art. The sculpture is anatomically correct and robotic to boot, it was plugged in but I was reluctant to ask the realtor to turn it on. And to answer what your are probably thinking, yes I did get better shots of this. Makes for a great screen saver.

Master Bedroom, some Regent is rolling over in grave out of envy no doubt.

My second favorite piece is this chair. I'll let you guess which my first choice is.

And of course no series would be complete without Me and a Mirror.

Now I my like Versace, but a little restraint goes a long way.

Apparently fools radar, thermal sensors and satellite imaging. From tanks, to rocket launchers to full blown jet fighters, can now be yours at only a fraction of the cost.

Abstinence, Austerity & Grandeur

The Sisters of the Immaculate Heart Convent is located in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles. The structure was originally constructed as a residence by Earl C. Anthony. Founder of KABC. Sold to Daniel Donahue who then donated it to the religious order in 1976. The religious artifacts, altar etc were added at that time. The stipulation of the donation was that this would be the home of the order as long as it survived. There are only several nuns still inhabiting the convent, not even living in the main building. After the last nun passes away the property will revert to Arch Diocese of Los Angeles.
These days the main structure and surrounding grounds are mainly used for religious retreats, and extensively for filming.

Chandeliers, Mirrors & Auto Portraits

Scouting locations gets you into some interesting places, a whole host of places. Some mundane and pedestrian, others lavish. From municipal & civic structures, to clubs and bars. At times even to elegant Beverly Hills mansions.

One thing I usually find is a mirror or two, and always take the opportunity to take an auto-portrait. In one sense, it personalizes the space for me and in another, it validates that I was there.

Street Signs - "Remind me again, where am I ?"

Street signs can be helpful. They can tell you where you are. They can tell you where you've been. They can even give you directions. They can even give you a sense of place and time.
Sometimes however even the best of intentions my go awry.
Below are 20 street signs that are hanging in a 10 block area of Downtown Los Angeles' Historic district. At times there are 3-4 signs on the same block. These are not all of the signs, just some of them.

Skid Row - Los Angeles 7th & Main

As the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg loom over the ash heaps in ‘The Great Gatsby',
so does the smile of Dr. Lee loom over the intersection of 7^th and Main in Los Angeles. The intersection, in Skid Row, that was affectionately labeled ‘Bukowsky Square’ by Larry Harnisch 3 to 4 years ago.

George Wilson in ‘The Great Gatsby’ refers to it as God, “God Knows what you’ve been doing, ………… God sees everything”. Does the same metaphor apply to the smile?

The sign was originally an advertisement for Dr. White. Dr. Lee merely pasted his name over that of his predecessor. Although, I might add rather poorly because as you can see the sign now reads ‘Dr. ‘Dr. Lee’ ’.

This intersection was also once home to ‘Craby Joe’s’. A bar that was made famous by amongst others Charles Bukowski. Although the bar closed in 2007, you can still faintly see the outlines of the removed sign.
Given the history of the bar and its significant role in the area, shouldn’t the sign be restored and the site declared a landmark ?

I’m not sure about God , but it would certainly make me and quite a few others smile!

Old Los Angeles Hotels

In the 'Core' District of Los Angeles, there are still a number of the old hotels standing. At their peak they were probably quite wonderful. They fell from grace when the area declined and was known as 'skid row'. Some only used as film locations.
Recently however, some have seen a rebirth. Whether renovation or conversion, condos or lofts, a new life has been given to them. Others still remain run down transient residences.
Here are a few of them.

2010 MB 6 man Beach Volleyball Tournament

The unofficial description for the annual Manhattan Beach 6 man (team) Beach Volleyball Tournament used to be 'booze and bodies strewn across the beach'. It was not how it started out, but it is what it had become. In 2009 the booze took over, 90,000 (est.) attendees, many very drunk. This year Manhattan Beach decided to clamp down. No alcohol on the beach, that doesn't mean you couldn't get a drink at the nearby bars or at one of the many house parties adjacent to the beach, but no booze on the beach. Access to the beach was restricted, the contents of all bags were checked, no opened containers of any sort were permitted. One really smart move. The attendance for Day 1 (Saturday July 31) was still at about 60,000 (est.), huge but notably better than the year before, and you could actually move around. Day 2, the finals day, felt more like a beach volleyball event. Much smaller crowds with a real emphasis on the sport.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery

The most visited cemetery in the world is Paris's Pere-Lachaise Cemetery. A cemetery containing the remains of notable figures in the field of Art, Literature, Philosophy etc. From H'Eloise & Abelard, Bellini, Moliere to Piaf and Morrison. A significant part of the past 400 years of Western Culture is interned here.
A different culture is buried in Hollywood Forever Cemetery. A culture of the new world, a culture of the 20th century, and a culture of a new art form - film.
Hollywood Forever Cemetery is located on 62 acres on Santa Monica Blvd. in Hollywood. Originally founded in 1899 as Hollywood Memorial Park, ironically it is adjacent to a Movie Studio - Paramount. The list of famous people interned or entombed is extensive. A veritable 'who was who' in the entertainment industry. From Rudolf Valentino to Johnny Ramone. From the famous, Douglas Fairbanks, to the infamous, the mobster Bugsy Siegel, and countless others in between. Not all of Hollywood is buried here, but a good portion is.
In addition to visiting the grave sites tombs and crypts, the cemetery is now open for other functions. You can view an open air film on Saturday evenings, or you can even take a yoga class on selected weekends. I hope they don't do weddings.

The main hall of The Cathedral Mausoleum with its many Saints protecting the tenants. In crypt 1205 you will find Rudolf Valentino, the Mausoleum also houses his shrine.

The Douglas Fairbanks memorial has the scale befitting a national hero.

The Rotunda behind the main chapel.

And to keep pace with changing times and cultural influences, there is even a Thai buddhist section in the cemetery.

Production Design: Depicting the Future

As a Production Designer you are always challenged, that is beyond the usual 'time and money'. One is even more challenged when you have to predict/depict the near future (in your designs). Near future is always more difficult for many reasons, than a total fantasied future. One reason in particular: depicting technology. Sometimes you really nail it (at least get really close). A few days ago while browsing the web, I came across a chair entitled 'The Surf Chair'. This was chair was actually designed in 2000.

This brought to mind an AT&T Commercial Campaign I designed in the mid 80's. The entire commercial chronicled AT&T advances since 1876 and concluded with a brief glimpse into the future. This glimpse was a 'futuristic workstation'.

AT&T World's Fair 1986

The concept behind this was a swiveling/collapsable 'work station'. An office in a box, so to speak, multiples could be used to create an office pool area. The slightly concave flat screen monitor (well ahead of its time) would retract, while work surface would pivot from horizontal to vertical for storage. Incidentally the monitor was intended as a touch screen. A little crude in construction, but then it had to be assembled in about a day. At that time I had just purchased my first Mac (the Mac Plus), which bore no resemblance to what I had designed.

Taschen Books is releasing a unique Art edition of Christo's work. 'Christo & Jeanne-Claude, Art Edition, No. 1-6'. Original collages, 6 in total, of the "Over the River.." and "the Mastaba" projects, accompanied by the Art editions No. 1-6. One collage and one clamshell book $50k. Yes a hefty price tag but then it is an original by Christo. Not surprising several have already been pre-sold.

Also included with every book is a copy of "Project for Jewelry on Jeanne-Claude's Hand", an edition limited to 100 signed and numbered copies.

Taschen is also offering several other options on Christo's work. Clamshell box on its own (1,000 copies), and Clamshell box with a copy (no. 7-100) of "Project for Jewelry on Jeanne-Claude's Hand".
Really quite wonderful in my opinion.

Architecture - Houses Built on Stilts

While Terunobu Fujimori's 'Tea House' may be extreme and certainly gives new meaning to 'High Tea'

Other houses have been built on stilts, especially here in the U.S. for more pragmatic reasons. Take these homes for instance that were built in North Carolina's outer banks.

An area susceptible to severe storms and significant tidal surge, pilings or stilts help not only protect from continual water damage, but also facilitate relocating the homes as the shoreline erodes.

Olson Kundig Architects, have taken a novel approach to a weekend house by building it on steel stilts. This 1,000 square-foot house, which looks more like a watch tower or a hunting tower, is located near a river in a flood plain. Delta Shelter as it is called is a three story structure on a 20' x 20' footprint, and can be completely shuttered when the owner is away.

'Architectural Masterpieces'

'Architectural Masterpieces' is a collection of writing instruments resulting from a collaboration between S.T. Dupont and jeweler Phillipe Tournaire.

A limited edition, a set of 3 pens, 15 pieces each. Total of only 45 pens ($7,300-$9,300 per pen) and all are already spoken for.

The ‘Masterpieces’ were inspired by three architectural icons – St Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, Les Invalides in Paris and The Pogoda of the Sun in Guilin China.

Several days ago, on my pages , I posted on Benzinger watches. Beautiful timepieces that range between $20k and $50k. Certainly the price of a Mini or even a well discounted Benz. But I just read that Nadal was wearing a $525k watch during his last match at the French Open. A Richard Mille watch. WTF, that's the price of a house. Checking the RM website I was amazed, not by the beauty, but by the fact that I would never want to wear one of these.
