You know, I just can't walk past a mirror without taking a self portrait.

What Becomes of Old and Abandoned Hospitals?

What happens to hospitals when they become outdated, infrastructure crumbling, technologically inferior to the others nearby. Well in most cases, a new wing or two are built and the old one demolished. In other cases they are abandoned, often ransacked, left as refuge for some, only to be re-discovered by Urban Archaeologists decades later.
In some instances, the facilities go bankrupt. When these hospitals abruptly close, the staff merely walks away, the equipment that can be sold is, and the rest including medical record and files are left behind.
In Los Angeles however, old hospitals never die, they merely get re-cycled (or repurposed if you will) as film locations. Equipment, files, records, furniture and supplies that are left behind become valuable set dressing and props.
Here is one I explored the other day while we were filming for a new TV Medical series.

Just a warning - this is a very dark tour of the facility!

Although Closed in 2004, the sign still remains.

Let's take you on a hypothetical journey. You enter and wait!

Then down a corridor.

To admissions or administration.

Down another corridor,

  To Radiology!

Down another corridor,

To the Corridor outside of the ORs. You could call this pre-op waiting!

The operating team scrubs!

 Wheels you in.

Off to recovery.

Then to your very own private room, I've omitted several corridors for fear of this post getting way too long.

Lucky you, it is a private room!

Others might not be so fortunate,

 Further observation,

 And tests!

 More surgery!

This is the point where it gets depressing!!!!

 Down the elevators,

 Down a basement corridor,

 And, into the Morgue!!

The hand written entries in this ledger, are of all the autopsies performed here.

In another room in the basement I found the facilities office, full of plans for the future. Unfortunately like those souls who passed through the morgue the hospital did not survive either!!

An Urban Garden - what remains.

Passing through Hawthorne the other day I came across a large parking lot adjacent to a closed hospital.  In the middle of the parking lot was an old prefab mobile home. Surrounding this structure were a few dozen concrete planters - of various size. Although the planters were filled with soil, nothing was growing aside from a few weeds. I did notice however that several of these pots had little figures in them. They seem to be miniature totems or scare crows. All were constructed with a sense of humor. While I was photographing them, the resident of the trailer happened by. "What are you doing' he asked, I replied that I was photographing the figures on sticks, "oh" he said "those are for my garden, but I didn't plant anything this year."
Here are the images I took:

Winnie the Pooh in a flowing skirt!

Meant to scare whom or what away.

This one had fallen in between 2 planters.

Pumpkin flower???

Detail.

Perhaps this is where the winter wheat was planted!

Speaking of grasses, in the middle of the barren parking lot, stood a solitary traffic  cone with a grass growing out the top.

Eating Japanese - Yakitori Koshiji

A recurring theme of mine is of course food, after all man cannot live on words & concepts alone. One of my favorite cuisine is Japanese. I am always looking for a new good Yakitori, Sushi or Ramen Restaurant. Recently I had Yakitori at Koshiji. Koshiji has 2 locations, one in Little Tokyo and the other in Torrance. I had eaten at the Little Tokyo location before so I thought I would try the Torrance one this time.
Here are some images that I took while I was there. These images are not really of the food, more or less of the vibe. All images were shot with a Panasonic GX-1 w/ 20mm f/1.7 lens.

Surfing at Breakwall Redondo Beach - 2012.01.06

Today was 'Big (Wave) Friday', for some unknown reason it has always happened on a Wednesday, but this year it's a 'Big Friday'. I had shot at the Manhattan Beach Pier earlier in the day, but at lunch I had heard it was really big at Breakwall. I had been wanting to shoot this surfing spot on a big day, so today was my opportunity.
Afternoon shots on the West Coast are always problematic, the sun is low in the sky and the surfers and the waves are backlit. To complicate matters even more there was a great deal of spray in the air, reducing visibility and focus even more.
These are todays shots.

Between The Holidays 2011 - Images From Around the House.

Seems every December lately, I am house bound for one reason or another. Last year I not only had a knee injury but it also rained for 2 weeks straight. At that time I discovered the Hipstamatic App for the iPhone. I used it to shoot an extensive series of images documenting where and how I live. In addition to my regular photography I have shot over 4K Hipstamatic images in the past year.
So, this year I found myself in a similar situation, so again I decided to document my house (mostly in color this time).
